Chez Ali is the brainchild of Stockholm musician and Steve Buscemi's Dreamy Eyes member Elias Mahfoud. Elias initially started working on Chez Ali when living in London 2014-15 making sounds that channelled the British capital's soulful and jazzy indie sound, as mastered by King Krule, Cosmo Pyke and more, in his very own way. After working with the project on-and-off since and performing it live for the first time just last year Elias finally shared Chez Ali with the world earlier this year, putting out the smooth and irresistible Blue Cheese. On October 16th, new single Adore You is released via Rama Lama Records, followed by a debut EP in November.
Adore You is about "looking back on the initial meeting with that special someone, to the point that you’re almost obsessed and the thought of your next meeting brings excitement and energy to your life" and shows Chez Ali in his most dance-friendly mood.
Chez Ali has been hailed by both national and international tastemakers such as Pigeons & Planes, CLASH, Highsnobiety, Spotify’s Fresh Finds and more, with praise such as ”your new favorite artist”, ”a potent, highly individual voice” and ”if Mac DeMarco was attractive in a non-gross way”. Considering that this is all with just one single to date, the expectations on what's to follow are accurately high. Adore You is yet another slice from Elias' wide spectrum of soulful indie pop gems, equally influenced by indie greats such as Pavement or King Krule as soulful R&B icons as D'Angelo.
The sound of Chez Ali's debut offering, the Buenas Noches Club EP, has been crafted together with pop producer Luki, a quite unexpected collaboration that makes Chez Ali's music stand out: "He helped me produce “Blue Cheese” and also helped write some songs on the EP while also serving as a producer. What I like about our relationship is that we come from two different scenes. I’m deeply involved in the indie scene in Sweden, whilst Luki’s background as a producer/songwriter is rooted in pop. It’s a clash of cultures, but somehow we make it work and I’m glad we met", Elias Mahfoud says and the impact of this melting pot is hard not to hear on the bubbly Adore You.
